Swine Guild Russia: The Minds Behind the Memes
The Minds Behind the Memes series intends to showcase each of the active language channels of Swine Guild. As part of the global NEAR Ecosystem, we want to highlight the visions, humor types, meme styles, and the potential for the adoption of crypto in the communities worldwide as we seek to enrich and embellish the internet culture of NEAR Protocol.
Back in August, only two months after Swine Guilds official launch, I was approached by haenko.near in my Twitter DMs about a collective of three NEAR enthusiasts who make memes about NEAR in Russian, suggesting they join us in our meme marketing endeavors. The idea to share memes in other languages exploded in my mind as something that could take the guild to the next level, with the potential to bring in audience members on a more global scale and create content that will appeal to more groups in the crypto and NEARverse’s. Since their start under the Swine Guild Umbrella, Swine Guild Russia has been one of the most steadfast and successful language initiatives to emerge out of our journey as a guild. They are self-sufficient, hard working, and knowledgeable about the subjects they make memes about. Not to mention they are currently running a Russian meme contest centered on the theme of NEAR Crowd, a platform that allows you to earn NEAR by performing simple tasks. I want to highlight Swine Guild RU as the first language group in the “The Minds behind the Memes” series.
How did the Swine Guild RU get involved with NEAR?
“The guys and I always made memes, mostly friendly memes on personal topics, but after I got carried away with cryptocurrency and NEAR, I started making memes on these topics,” says haenko.near. He became interested in cryptocurrency and made his first investment in 2019. “I liked the concept that anyone can invest in cryptocurrency, with any deposit, and without signing any agreements with a broker,” he says. He discovered and invested in NEAR in March, and similarly to his friend yonota.near, became interested in NEAR Crowd when it launched. They both became early participants in this project and since then, they have become so familiar with the NEAR ecosystem that they enjoy making funny and educational memes about it. The third member of Swine Guild RU came into the fold in a different way than his two colleagues. He transitioned from his offline business into the world of cryptocurrency, at first acting accordingly to the buy-sell scheme. He gradually got involved in crypto on a more in depth level and began to earn money already within his projects- farming, staking, and earning various bounties. He first discovered NEAR in 2020 through a token sale on Coinlist, and has since become an avid enthusiast and contributor to the space. Throughout it all, ralfusha.near constantly made memes to express his reaction to updates and events, and memes about cryptocurrency “began to appear somehow by themselves”, as his time in the cryptoverse increased.
What is it like making memes for a Russian audience?
The way images and words are used together to communicate via what we call a “meme”, often changes and shifts depending on the culture and language group the content is being made for. For the Russian speaking community, as in the CIS countries, memes are quite chaotic, there is no one common genre. Sometimes old forgotten memes become funnier with time. As yonota.near says, “As strange as it sounds, it can be compared to wine. The older the wine, the better.” To help contextualize memes in Russian-speaking culture even further, ralfusha.near explains that, “For the most part, the culture of memes in Russia and the Russian-speaking space is built on irony and post-irony. Sarcasm and the ability to joke on almost any topic is a large part of the genesis of many Russian memes.” Not too far off from this sentiment, heanko agrees that in Russia, a lot of sarcasm is used in memes, and people like meme content about problems that are familiar to everyone. It is important to note that their insights and knowledge on their culture and the humor within their community is an invaluable component in our guild as a whole being able to reach and include the large group of Russian speaking people that are involved with crypto and with NEAR.
What is the Swine Guild RU meme-making process?
The collective’s creative process is quite simple: they throw in an idea in the form of text, select a picture that fits with it, and gradually make adjustments. Yonota.near approaches meme-making by looking for trending topics in both memes and the NEAR Ecosystem, and try to tie these two together. The three memers agree that working in a trio is very simple and convenient. Together, they discuss ideas on what topics will be best to showcase, and then sketch and workshop ideas until they come up with the final result. They believe their work is very important because newcomers who do not understand anything about crypto or NEAR, often find it hard to understand concepts through articles and youtube videos alone. Their goal is to show how a particular product works with the help of a couple of funny pictures and sayings, like they did for one of their meme contests titled “Near Protocol in Schemes and Memes.”
On the subject of the adoption of crypto in Russian culture, haenko.near states, ”If I’m not mistaken, the Russian-speaking community ranks third in terms of the number of people in the NEAR Ecosystem. With the launch of NEAR Crowd and then the further transition of its work only with the Russian community, this was a very large number of people’s introduction to cryptocurrency, and especially NEAR Protocol.” The amount of news in the NEAR Ecosystem seems incomprehensible to outsiders, and because they are not familiar with a lot of terms and don’t really understand how blockchain works, Swine Guild RU tries to convey information as simply and fun as possible. Their hope is that a person who has just recently got into NEAR can learn something new and be entertained while doing it.
Any upcoming plans or initiatives?
Though Swine Guild RU has been consistent in their work, they have been growing and establishing themselves more and more as the months go by. Their future plans include the creation of more memes, of course, and specifically more “educational” memes. These fine creators plan to make memes about more projects, expanding out into DeFi partnerships, updates, and events launched on the NEAR and Aurora. They have also recently started a Telegram channel where they are beginning to actively engage with meme content, as the majority of the Russian audience uses Telegram for their crypto updates and news.
